One day, while in the produce dept of my local health food store a lady standing next to me commented that she didn't know how "they" grow those little tiny "baby" carrots.
Needless to say I was floored. I hope my mouth didn’t fly open in astonishment. I very calmly told her they did NOT grow that way but rather a factory takes a large carrot and runs it through a machine, which cut them into perfect sizes with little round bottoms and tops.
And, of course you know me, I had to go-on-to-tell-her how the factory has to CONSTANTLY run chlorine bleach through the machinery to prevent contamination. Thus the white film we often see on those "baby" carrots is really . . . BLEACH residue.
Since I don't pour bleach on my fresh produce I avoid those who do. Same with white sugar - bleach and ammonia are used in the processing to make it WHITE.
It only takes a couple of minutes to scrub, peel and cut FRESH carrots into sticks for e-z snacking. You can do several ahead and store them in snack bags all ready to go out the door when you do.
